Tech Official Profile: Peter Aldridge

How long have you been officiating?

I’ve been an official for 13 years, with a period of a few years with minimal involvement due to overseas work commitments but now back fully participating.

What’s your proudest achieve in triathlon?

Proudest moment as an official was my appointment as Race Referee at the Australian Duathlon Championship several years ago. My recent achievement as a qualified ITU official has been an honor.

Favorite event to officiate at?

I’ve two favorite events that are in stark contrast to each other. Firstly, Geelong 70.3, as it is a challenging race that attracts some of the best Ironmen in the world. Secondly, the ‘Weetbix Kids Triathlon’ as the look of pure enjoyment on the faces of the 7 and 8 years olds is priceless, plus it is great to see so many kids getting out and having a go.

Favorite sports outside of triathlon?

Outside of Triathlon I’ve always been a keen sailor, having competed in a number of Sydney-Hobart Ocean races.

Also I used to enjoy downhill snow skiing; which I how I got into competing in triathlon as I was recovering from a broken leg that initially only allowed me to swim and then progressively to ride a bike. Eventually I got back to some running for fitness so the progression to triathlon came naturally.

Other hobbies?

Until recently work and trying to stay fit was all consuming. Having recently retired I’m now spending time renovating the house and exercising the dog.

Best part of being a Technical Official?

The best part of being an official is the opportunity to still be involved in a sport that I loved as a competitor and get up close to the action on the field of play for some incredible athletes. I also enjoy mentoring newer Technical Officials, while still learning something new at each race I attend.
